You’re an ad-man, or ad-woman in the 1970s. You’re looking for your next project. And you’re dreaming…
…of your next big assignment…
The next morning your phone rings.
It’s an Advertising agency representative. “No time to explain,” he says. “Can you be in our office in an hour?” “Yes,” you reply, “But can you tell me about the project?” “I’m finishing up a meeting,” he states, “I’ll fill you in when you get here!”
On the way, you’re imagining the project. Probably something sexy! A new Porsche campaign maybe? A new “Marlboro Man” advertisement? Budweiser Beer perhaps? An NFL televison spot?
“No,” answers the manager when you get to the conference room. “Toilet-Bowl Cleaner!”
The Ty-D-Bol man was an icon of television marketing in America beginning in the 1970s. It was a marketing/advertising campaign which made Ty-D-Bol the undisputed king of toilet-bowl cleaning products! I’ve done some research to try and find out whose idea this brilliant marketing and advertising campaign was. I was unable to find an answer.
What I do know is this…
Moments of sheer brilliance can come out of even the most mundane and “crappy” of assignments (yes, pun intended!). With vision, creativity and spirit, the next big idea can be just around the next corner!
And…if you can make toilets and toilet-bowl cleaners “cool,” you can achieve just about anything!
Whoever you are, wherever you are: “job well done!”
FYI: For anyone who might be the least bit curious where the inspiration for this post came from…a fellow biz-blogger told me she had run out of ideas. I said “blog about anything!” She said, “If it’s so easy, I dare you to blog about a toilet!” I believe that in business-blogging you truly can blog about anything!
